“My husband had glaucoma as well as cataract surgery in both eyes with Dr. Ngai within a few months. The office was very accommodating of his needs and Dr. Ngai was very patient and thorough in explaining and offering expert advice on options such as choice of artificial lens to replace the natural lens.

Most people would occasionally heard about someone being diagnosed with glaucoma but did not realize the ensuing detrimental permanent damage that could result in blindness when the condition is not treated in a timely manner, especially when there’s an acute attack. It’s with pure stroke of luck that my husband got referred to Dr Ngai through another eye-care specialist who found that the eye pressure in my husband’s reddish eye was exceedingly high.

When my husband complained of soreness in his eye on the last day of a trip to Tahoe, we thought it’s just the common kind of infectious red eye disease that would heal on its own after a few days. My husband who usually lives overseas had no local health insurance so we were weary of being hit by a huge medical bill.

We consulted our nephew who’s a doctor and he thought the same. Fortunately our daughter decided to book an appointment with a specialist to play safe. That turned out to be the critical decision that would save my husband’s vision

Upon receiving the urgent consultation request, Dr Ngai opened up a spot amidst his fully booked schedule to take over my husband’s case. Almost immediately, he confirmed the diagnosis as acute narrow angle glaucoma in one eye. Then came another shock —- the other eye that seemed perfectly normal also had another form of glaucoma that had been progressing at a much slower rate over the years. Therefore surgery would be needed for both eyes.

Such news was too overwhelming for us to absorb right away. The uncertainty of whether the artificial lens of choice would be good and comfortable enough generated a lot of stress as there’s no artificial lens that’s perfect to all conditions the human lens is capable of. We did a lot of research right away. The outcome aligned exactly with what Dr Ngai had suggested. 

After surgery, the eye that was diagnosed with slow glaucoma gave my husband close to perfect vision right away. It took much longer for my husband to feel comfortable with the lens in the eye that suffered an acute attack but it’s comforting to hear from him that slowly but surely the vision has been gradually improving over time for that eye even though the damage to the optical nerve is actually irreversible. 

Later on, we heard from a friend about someone who did not realize the importance of annual eye checks. It’s only after he lost vision in one eye that he found out from his doctor he had glaucoma. 

Glaucoma is indeed a silent killer of vision. With the educational video Dr Ngai is planning on producing, I hope the public will be better informed on eye diseases and related preventive eye care. 

I am truly grateful that my daughter took her father’s health issue seriously and Dr Ngai was caring enough to render the much needed timely surgeries amidst his busy schedule to save my husband’s vision.
