The retina is the light sensing layer lining the back of the eye. A retinal tear can let fluid seep under the retina and lift it away, called a retinal detachment. A detachment is an emergency that can cause permanent vision loss, but a tear found early can often be sealed with laser before it detaches.

What we do
A dilated exam of the full retina, including the far edges where most tears happen. Small tears are usually treated with laser to seal the edges, often as a quick office procedure, and we arrange this promptly. Detachments need urgent surgery with a retina specialist, and we coordinate that care.
Are all floaters dangerous?
Most people have a few floaters, and they are usually harmless. What matters is a sudden change: a burst of new floaters, flashes or a shadow. Those need a dilated exam even if the symptoms fade.
Common questions
My new floaters are getting better. Do I still need to be seen?
Yes. A tear can be present even when symptoms improve. Any sudden new floaters or flashes should be checked with a dilated exam.
Is laser treatment for a retinal tear painful?
It is done in the office with numbing drops. Most people feel only mild discomfort and go home the same day.
Can a retinal detachment be prevented?
Not always, but finding and treating a tear before fluid gets under the retina often prevents a detachment. That is why prompt exams for new symptoms matter.
